Mermaid in Love

Chapter 5. An Unexpected Encounter

The artist gripped the dolphins tight—
Two sleek, strong guides of sea-born grace.
They cut through waters, blue and bright,
Ascending from the deep’s embrace.
Behind them swam the mermaid queen,
Her gaze still fixed on ocean’s rim.
The shoreline far, the world serene—
But creatures stirred and shadows dimmed.
The sea life paused, their paths undone,
All startled by the dolphins’ flight.
Then something dark blocked out the sun—
A rival swam into the light.
He cut across their ocean trail—
Tall, swift, and not a friend at all.
A second merman, fierce and pale,
And instantly, the sea turned small.
The dolphins dove in full retreat,
The artist left with only her.
The stranger circled, dark and fleet,
His glare a storm, his pride a blur.
He watched the painter, cold and hard,
His anger barely held at bay.
To him—a threat, a bold wildcard…
To her—some dream that drifted his way.
The merfolk met in sharp debate,
Their words unspoken, wild, intense.
A cry then cracked through ocean’s gate—
A shriek that shattered every sense.
The painter sagged, his limbs went weak,
A tremor shook him head to toe.
But Isis saved him—cheek to cheek,
She held him safe above the flow.
When strength returned, his blade came free,
Its silver gleam kissed morning’s hush.
The rival saw—and fled to sea,
With one last wave, a parting rush.
She helped him swim through foam and spray,
Still dazed, his soul not quite at rest.
For nature does not smile or play
With hearts in love beneath the crest.
